The White House has said President Donald Trump’s decision to suspend sanctions on Iran was motivated by the U.S. fear of “significant financial losses” and that the deal would ultimately make the U-S-Iran relationship safer.
However, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, warned that sanctions would “have a catastrophic effect” on Iran’s economy, according to the official Fars news agency.
“The sanctions will have a catastrophic impact on our economy,” Khamenei said in a televised speech on Thursday.
“It will make it impossible to develop the economy of the country, and the country will lose all economic capabilities and capability for economic growth,” he added.
Khamenei has also said that Iran will retaliate against any U.N. Security Council resolution that imposes sanctions on Tehran.
