News24.com 1 September 2018 16:04:15 North Korea has deployed troops to an area along its border with the United States, according to a US official.
The official told the Associated Press that the deployment was a “first step towards addressing the challenges that the United Nations Special Envoy for North Korea Affairs has raised”.
The official was not authorised to publicly discuss the deployment by name.
North Korea is believed to have about 3,000 troops in the area, including 2,000 personnel based in the border town of Dandong.
The deployment comes as the United Nation’s Special Envoys for North and South Korea continue their two-week trip to North Korea.
The mission is the first of its kind to take place in North Korea and is expected to last more than a month.
