NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has been in talks with several top defensive coordinators in the league, and that includes a few that could become his own next week.
Here’s how to get them on board.
Greg Roman, Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator, defensive backs assistant at Miami and Washington: The Bengals have two vacancies at defensive coordinator.
If the Dolphins want to hire a defensive coordinator with extensive experience in the position, they need to get one with a history of winning in Cincinnati.
But it’s possible Roman could be the top candidate for the Bengals’ job.
In a 2014 interview with ESPN, he said, “The reason I have a lot of respect for [Tom] Coughlin is he’s won in Miami and he’s going to continue to win.”
The Bengals’ defensive backs coach has a history with Coughlins.
He coached linebackers at Miami from 2008 to 2013.
His linebackers coach at Miami, Jim Caldwell, is currently the coach at Ohio State.
Roman has been an assistant at several schools, including Miami, Washington, Alabama and Penn State.
Mike Zimmer, Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator: The Vikings are searching for a defensive coach after their defense fell apart under coordinator Mike Zimmer in 2017.
He’s also looking for a head coach, and he might be looking for one with experience.
In an interview with CBS Sports, Zimmer said he would have to hire an offensive coordinator in order to get to the next level.
He said he “will need to have someone that’s in the trenches and has a background in that area.
I’m going to need someone who’s an offensive mind, who knows what they’re doing.
I don’t know if that’s going a long way.”
Zimmer is a former quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals and New England Patriots.
He is a big proponent of zone blitzes and defensive front seven schemes, which have been effective against quarterbacks in recent seasons.
He was a member of the Bengals defensive staff for six seasons and was a defensive assistant under Zimmer.
John Fox, Chicago Bears defensive coordinator and defensive backs coordinator at Georgia: The Bears are looking for defensive coordinator John Fox to be their next defensive coordinator after Chip Kelly was fired as offensive coordinator last month.
Fox had been an offensive assistant with the Eagles from 2011 to 2013 and was an assistant with Atlanta for six years.
Fox spent the previous three years as the defensive coordinator at Ohio.
Fox coached linebackers in Atlanta, Philadelphia and Cleveland.
He spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles from 2016 to 2017 and has also coached linebackers for the Chicago Bears.
Kevin Coyle, Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator (coached by Bills defensive backs head coach Sean McDermott): The Bills are trying to find a new defensive coordinator for the next season after McDermott was fired after the Bills’ 1-4 start to the season.
Coyle is a familiar face to Bills fans.
The two were the linebackers coach in the New Orleans Saints defense from 2010 to 2013, and McDermott coached linebackers and defensive ends at Notre Dame from 2006 to 2008.
He previously coached defensive backs in Jacksonville, San Francisco and Kansas City.
Greg Cosell, Cincinnati Reds defensive coordinator/defensive backs assistant: The Reds are trying for a new head coach after Mike Zimmer was fired last month as the team’s offensive coordinator.
Coseell is the defensive backs and special teams coordinator at Virginia Tech.
He has worked with Zimmer in the past.
Cousell has coached linebackers, defensive ends and defensive line coaches in college and in the NFL.
Sean McDowell, Cincinnati Browns defensive coordinator-defensive coordinator (coordinator of special teams, linebackers, tight ends): The Browns have one vacancy at defensive coordinator after firing head coach Mike Pettine.
McDowell is the linebackers coordinator at North Carolina State.
He played for Pettine in 2012 and 2013.
McDowell has worked for Pettines teams in the ACC, SEC and the NFL and was the defensive assistant at Louisville from 2012 to 2016.
Jay Gruden, Washington Redskins offensive coordinator and Washington Redskins defensive backs director: The Redskins have one open defensive coordinator position.
Gruden is the offensive coordinator at Florida Atlantic.
He also spent time in the Miami Dolphins defensive backfield from 2006-2010.
He had an extensive coaching career in college at Florida, Cincinnati and South Carolina.
John Harbaugh, Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator: Harbaugh has been the offensive director for the Baltimore Ravens for the past three seasons, and in those three years he has won two national titles.
He became the head coach at Michigan State in 2012.
The Ravens are seeking a head coaching candidate after the firing of defensive coordinator Jim Caldwell.
Harbaugh spent time as the offensive line coach for the Denver Broncos and Cincinnati Bengals from 2009-2012.
Jeff Fisher, San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator–defensive line coach (coach of tight ends, linebackers and linebackers assistants): Fisher is the new defensive backs/special teams coordinator for San Diego, and his experience with the Rams in the 1990s could be an asset.
